In 2019, the demo-cities of China IWM NSP reduced GHG emissions from their operations in municipal solid waste management by almost 0.5 million tCO2e. This is equivalent to 100,000 cars not being used for a year or planting 22,000 trees.

According to the findings of the second monitoring tour that took place in November 2019, all cities have contributed to the result, with Bengbu (Anhui Province) having the biggest share in emission reductions due to the launch of a waste incineration plant. Besides waste incineration, the climate change-mitigating solutions of other cities included the use of landfill gas for energy generation, anaerobic digestion and composting.
