From 8-14 December, a study tour to Germany and Austria planned by the project team and its contractor, Renewables Academy, took place. It is the third in a series of capacity-building training courses on the topic of low-carbon heating. Previously, two courses had been held in the Chinese cities of Changzhi and Zhengzhou. The group comprising twelve participants from municipal governments, national research institutions and entrepreneurs visited various sites showcasing biogas, biomass, geothermal energy, heat pumps and heat storage, power-to-gas, smart cities and cutting-edge municipal planning approaches. They also visited a waste incineration plant which feeds into the heating grid.

The participants were particularly interested in economic and financial aspects, such as investment costs and amortisation periods. On the technical side, they were very interested in local heating grids and integrated planning. They were able to take home many innovative ideas and new insights that will enrich their future work. This is also demonstrated by participant requests received by the project team after the tour, asking for more information on smart cities and opportunities to purchase German small-scale biomass boilers.
