Xie Zhenhua returns as China’s new special envoy on climate issues

On February 25, with the approval of the central government, Mr. Xie Zhenhua was appointed China’s Special Envoy for Climate Change Affairs.

The Ministry of Ecology and Environment (MEE) has set up a special office for climate change affairs under the MEE Vice Minister to provide support for Mr. Xie Zhenhua in fulfilling his duties as office director. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and other departments will provide support as well.

Born in 1949, Mr. Xie Zhenhua has worked in the field of climate change for many years. He has served as Special Representative of the Chinese government on climate change affairs, leading the negotiations on China’s accession to the Paris Agreement. He also held leading positions in the NDRC, the State Environmental Protection Administration and other departments.
