China’s installed solar capacity rises 55.2% in 2023

Data released by China’s National Energy Administration (NEA) on 26 January 2024 showed that the country’s solar power generation capacity grew by a staggering 55.2% in 2023. The numbers highlight that over 216 GW of solar power have been added during 2023, equivalent to 14% of the world’s total installed PV capacity. China’s total installed PV capacity thus increased to 609 GW by the end of 2023.

According to Bloomberg News, China installed more solar panels in 2023 than any other single nation has installed in total. The monumental increase in solar power is complemented by a 20.7% rise in wind power capacity, showcasing the country’s commitment to clean energy. China committed to constructing 1,200 GW of renewable capacity by 2030 to support its 2030 and 2060 climate targets, and China is on track to meet this goal five years early. China’s overall power generation capacity grew by 13.9% over the course of 2023 and reached a total of 2,919 GW. Data from November 2023 already showed that China’s installed renewable energy capacity exceeded thermal power plant capacity for the first time.

Generation capacity (End of Dec. 2023) (GW) Growth rate (%) Year-on-Year
Total  2,919.6513.6
Hydro power  421.541.8

Ministry of Transport releases action plan to strengthen multimodal freight transport

On 29 September 2026, the Ministry of Transport, together with 11 other government departments and the China State Railway Group, issued the “Action Plan for Promoting High-Quality Development of Multimodal Transport and Optimizing the Transport Structure” (2026–2030). By 2030, the plan aims to improve links between railways, ports, inland terminals, logistics parks and industrial zones, strengthening multimodal freight services. Targets include an 80% railway connection rate in multimodal transport areas at coastal ports and more than 90% of freight transfers at key hubs completed within one hour. It also promotes shifts of suitable bulk freight from road to rail and water. For key industries, the plan targets an 85% share of clean transport.

Ministry of Transport issues 15th Five-Year Plan for Integrated Transport Service Development

The plan, released on 24 July 2026, focuses on a whole-chain, integrated and resilient freight and logistics system, alongside digitalisation, greener transport and rural connectivity. It envisages shifting freight from road to rail and water, scaling up new energy heavy-duty trucks and using digital tools for logistics operations and safety oversight. Specifically, it targets completion of 90% of freight transfers between transport modes within one hour at key integrated freight hubs and delivery and logistics stations in 90% of administrative villages. The share of new energy heavy-duty trucks is to rise from 4% in 2025 to 20% by 2030.
