In an extraordinary meeting on May 25, 2022, virtually attended by 100,000 Party cadres from all parts of the country, Premier LI Keqiang announced China would drastically increase its coal production to secure the country’s energy demand.
In addition to a series of fiscal and health policy decisions, local governments were asked to meet their coal production quotas to secure energy supplies. To meet increased energy demands, regulations for approving higher production capacity would be adjusted and procedures for designating coal mines would be expedited.
