China–Germany dialogue advances commercial vehicle charging infrastructure cooperation

The first China–Germany Dialogue on Commercial Vehicle Charging Infrastructure convened on 13 November 2025 in Beijing. Nearly 20 experts and representatives from research institutions, energy providers, charging and battery-swapping service providers, and commercial vehicle manufacturers from both countries joined the exchange. Discussions focused on policy frameworks, industrial development, technical pathways, grid integration, and innovative multi-scenario energy supply models for commercial vehicle electrification.

Zhang Yongwei, Vice Secretary General of China EV100, emphasised that commercial vehicle electrification plays a key role in supporting energy transition and transport decarbonisation, and highlighted the potential of structured bilateral cooperation.

During the meeting, experts from China and Germany shared updates on policies, infrastructure development, vehicle operation, technical standards, and energy supply models. The presentations illustrated ongoing pilot projects, lessons learned, and practical approaches for wider adoption.

In the roundtable discussion, chaired by Christian Hochfeld, Executive Director of the Agora Verkehrswende, participants exchanged perspectives on policy support, cost structures, battery and grid technologies, energy supply solutions, and multi-scenario applications. The discussion identified areas of convergence and potential collaboration, demonstrating the value of sharing experiences and knowledge between the two countries.

Participants noted that despite differences in energy structures, transport systems, and infrastructure deployment, China and Germany exhibit strong complementarity in technological innovation, application scenarios, and business models. Structured dialogue mechanisms were highlighted as essential for sustaining progress, enabling multi-stakeholder collaboration, experience sharing, and alignment on standards to support scalable deployment and operational efficiency. Integrating transport and energy planning, including renewable energy along key freight corridors, was emphasised as an important component of the transition.

The dialogue marked the establishment of the “China–Germany Commercial Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Dialogue Mechanism.” Insights and perspectives shared during the meeting will be consolidated into subsequent research reports, serving as reference for future cooperation on commercial vehicle charging infrastructure and broader green transport initiatives.

The first dialogue demonstrated the importance of international cooperation platforms for aligning stakeholders, exchanging practical experiences, and identifying collaborative opportunities. By leveraging complementary strengths in technology, industrial capacity, and policy frameworks, China and Germany aim to accelerate commercial vehicle electrification and advance a more sustainable and integrated transport system. The event lays the foundation for ongoing dialogue and joint initiatives that support global climate and energy transition goals.

Chinese Ministry of Transport participates in “Transport and Climate Change Week” in Berlin and exchanges with German ministries

The CDFT project organised a study tour for China’s Ministry of Transport (MoT) to participate in the Transport and Climate Change Week (TCCW) and meet with German ministries. During the study tour, the Chinese delegation exchanged views with German experts on promoting new energy vehicles, strengthening charging infrastructure, and advancing green logistics corridors. The discussions further revealed that, despite differences in regulatory approaches, both countries face similar challenges in expanding charging networks and integrating renewable energy. The delegation gained valuable insights and inspiration for future cooperation and policy learning advancing sustainable and inclusive mobility.

Exchange with Suzhou on urban freight and intermodal solutions

How can cities decarbonise freight transport while keeping deliveries efficient? As part of the CDFT project, the project team visited Suzhou in May 2025 to explore potential solutions. In meetings with the Suzhou Transport Bureau, local logistics companies, and the tech firm Zelos, discussions focused on green freight policies, unmanned delivery systems, and integrating clean vehicle fleets. The team also visited Taicang Port to observe intermodal freight operations. A key outcome: selecting a 240 km freight corridor for a case study to pilot zero-emission trucks and advance low-carbon logistics across the Yangtze River Delta.
