Host country China and the Secretariat of the CBD announced dates for the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention of Biological Diversity to be convened in two parts in Kunming, China.
MEE officially announced that, as decided by the 14th Bureau of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) on 14 July and approved by the Chinese government, the 15th Conference of the Parties to the CBD (CBD COP 15) will be held in two phases in Kunming, China, from 11-15 October 2021 and in the first half of 2022.
The first phase of the meeting takes place from 11-15 October 2021. The conference will take place in a hybrid format, participants outside China may join virtually and accredited delegates from embassies and organizations already located and based in China may join onsite. The main content will include the opening ceremony, leaders’ speeches, high-level meetings, general agenda, the release of the Kunming Declaration, as well as side events such as the Ecological Civilisation Forum and exhibitions. This event is expected to play a significant role in building resilience and galvanizing international cooperation in the face of growing environmental, health and development challenges, and provide political momentum for the preparations of the Post-2020 global biodiversity framework.
The second phase meeting will be held in person from 25 April-8 May 2022 to facilitate extensive and in-depth consultations and discussions, and to promote an ambitious and practical Post-2020 global biodiversity framework with broad consensus.
China plans on continuing to work with the Parties and the Convention Secretariat to overcome the negative impacts of the pandemic and make solid progress in the preparatory work for the Conference.
