Webinar: How can electricity markets help power systems integrate growing shares of wind and solar? On 11 November 2026, experts from Germany, Jiangsu and Sichuan will meet online to exchange on market design, grid planning and operation to strengthen the coordination between power market and electricity grid for better renewables integration.
The context:
The 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026–2030) is critical for building China’s new-type power system. As installed wind and solar capacity grows fast, the bottleneck is shifting: the question is no longer only how to build renewables, but how markets can integrate them. Price signals, ancillary service markets and congestion management decide whether flexibility pays — and whether clean power reaches consumers.
Germany brings long experience with market-based renewable integration. China is accelerating its unified national electricity market. Two partner provinces show how different the challenge can look: Jiangsu, a major industrial power consumer, faces grid congestion and interprovincial exchange issues; Sichuan, rich in hydropower, works on coordinating hydro, wind and solar.
What to expect:
- German experience: electricity markets and grid management for renewable integration — the EEG and power market, negative prices, congestion and redispatch, flexibility measures, distributed renewables
- Sichuan: the province’s electricity market and the role of hydropower in coordinating wind and solar
- Jiangsu: market development, capacity markets and distributed solar participation — contributions and challenges
- Discussion: how market design, grid planning and operation can be better coordinated across different power systems
Who should attend:
Energy market and grid experts, companies active in China’s power sector, researchers, and policymakers working on renewable integration and electricity market reform.

The webinar is organised under the project “Supporting Jiangsu and Sichuan in Renewable Energy Grid Integration – Policy and Mechanism Research”, which promotes exchange between German partners and the two Chinese partner provinces on renewable energy integration. The project is supported by the International Climate Initiative (IKI), one of the German Federal Government’s central instruments for promoting international climate action.
