Updates on China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development (CCICED)

On 26 March 2021, the Environmental Partnership Project supported the Special Policy Study (SPS) ”Major Green Technology Innovation and Implementation Mechanisms” workshop which was hosted by the World Economic Forum. Dr. Christian Stärz (Director of the Environmental Partnership Project) moderated the panel discussion during the second half of the event.

On 18 May 2021, a regional meeting took place in Shanghai to discuss experiences and best practices regarding green technology innovation and implementation mechanisms, during which Dr. Christian Stärz participated as an “International Expert Advisor”. The focus was on the exchange with the private sector. Particularly, renewable energy, mobility, and paper industries were of interest.

On 20 May 2021, a CCICED Chief Advisors and Secretariat Joint Working Meeting(CHAD meeting) took place, during which the latest work progress of the CCICED as well as the schedule for 2021 were discussed.

On 03 June 2021, the Environmental Partnership Project participated in the CCICED 2021 Roundtable and High-level Dialogue on “International Cooperation for Ecology and Environment”, which took place in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. The roundtable discussions of this year were held under the theme of “Building a Community with a Shared Future for Humanity: Synergies between Pollution Control and Carbon Emission Reduction”. The CCICED shared research outcomes in the area of climate governance and nature-based solutions. Furthermore, various ideas (e.g. implementation of new development concept) were shared with the local government of Jiangsu Province.

Accelerating the Establishment of a Waste Recycling System

The General Office of the State Council issued the Opinions on Accelerating the Establishment of a Waste Recycling System on 6 February 2024, which emphasize the importance of resource recycling and reuse.  In this new policy, more quantitative targets are proposed, which provide clear indicators of policy implementation effectiveness. The new Opinions also expand the scope of waste categories to encompass agricultural waste and bulk solid waste, propose additional pathways for resource utilization and introduce the idea of ‘Extended Producer Responsibility’. In addition, the Opinions propose to integrate other countries’ relevant regulations and standards.

Official announcement on CBD COP 15
