On 23 September, the China Electricity Council (CEC) hosted the sub-forum “Green Development Mechanism Promoting the Low-Carbon Transition of the Energy and Power Sector” as part of the China Carbon Market Conference 2025. The session attracted more than 100 participants, including representatives from China’s power industry, research institutions, and international stakeholders in the energy and power sector.
Markus Wypior, Project Director of the IKI Energy project, gave a presentation on the role of market mechanisms in supporting the German energy transition. He first outlined German energy transition goals and core principles and explained how market instruments and related policies have created incentives for renewable energy development and system integration, which significantly contributed to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. He concluded by elucidating present challenges due to a lack of transmission lines and negative prices and shedding light on the need for controllable power plant capacity for phases with low renewable energy generation.
By showcasing examples of the energy transition implementation in the two German states Baden-Württemberg (BW) and North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), he analysed how state-level action complements national targets and contributes to Germany’s overall climate ambition. Finally, he highlighted the ongoing cooperation between BW and NRW and the Chinese provinces of Jiangsu and Sichuan, which provides a valuable platform for the future exchange of experiences and best practices under the IKI energy project.
