As one of the pilot “sponge cities,” Xiamen has made significant progress in developing climate-resilient and sustainable solutions to water-related issues that have arisen from rapid economic development and climate change. CRR’s case study details Xiamen’s unique experience in building and financing an ecology-friendly and sustainable water system. The city has incorporated nature-based solutions to help water fulfill a natural cycle of storage, conservation, usage, and release, without waterlogging the area or disrupting the city. There are plans to export and replicate the Xiamen model elsewhere in China, incorporating specific local conditions best-suited to each city.
