27 November 2014 – The Sino-German Project “Capacity Building for the Establishment and Development of a Technical and Institutional Infrastructure for Achieving China’s 2020 Targets (GHG-Monitoring)” held its closing workshop “International and Local Best Practices in Monitoring and Reporting of Greenhouse Gas Emissions” on Thursday, November 27th, 2014 at Kempinski Hotel Beijing.
This international workshop was organised by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and supported by National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) to review best practices and lessons learnt in the field of monitoring and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions. In this regard we invited renowned Chinese and international experts and practitioners to facilitate an exchange of experience. Among others, speakers from the Shanghai Information Centre, SinoCarbon, FutureCamp, Shenzhen Low Carbon Development Foundation, Sun Yat-Sen University and WRI attended the workshop and covered topics such as challenges of MRV guidelines in the transport sector, data management in the monitoring and reporting process, local MRV regulations in different industry sectors, local MRV designs and practices as well as introduction to international MRV systems.
The GHG-monitoring project was jointly implemented by the NDRC and GIZ, within the framework of the German International Climate Initiative (IKI) on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB). The project supported the Chinese partners in the establishment of an a transparent and verifiable GHG monitoring system by building capacity as well as providing international advisory services and knowledge exchange especially in regard to the upcoming carbon trading scheme in China. At this juncture, national and regional strategies for the implementation of GHG emissions monitoring systems are considered.
This workshop was the final activity within the GHG-Monitoring project and aimed at reviewing some of the project results, but also looked ahead.
